The day and age of the ex-reality and porn “stars”

What was originally intended to be just one post about my Saturday night here in my Livejournal has turned into a Blog Battle of sorts.

Kendra Jade Rossi decided to post this blog on her Myspace page in response to the attention my Livejournal entries about Lukas Rossi’s show the other night are getting:

I don’t know how many more times mandimercedes and I have to point out that neither she nor I were kicked out of the club! Maybe Kendra is confusing us with this:

Then I opened my cell phone and they came over to tell me to turn it off…I had to tell them sarcastically "I will turn off my phone I will also be quiet and please dont hit me…" 🙂 laughing we left..

I’ve been to Bedrock before and I know this is not their style. They only did this because Kendra Jade and Lukas wanted that. Again, I’d like to point out that the staff at Bedrock are awesome and I have nothing against them. They are friends of mine. It is Lukas and Kendra that are unprofessional.

The only reason the girl said "you suck" in a private conversation is because of how Lukas was acting. Funny how none of the males who straight up yelled out mean things to Lukas in a loud manner were not kicked out. Only a female was kicked out. I wonder why.
There was a girl who was kicked out and just let back in a few mintues later.

I wish I could post some of the other messages I got agreeing with me and telling me other stories about Lukas and Kendra, but I would be giving away their identities, even if I took out names. Some people are from L.A. and know them. The messages I received are freakin’ funny!

By the way, if you guys hate bloggers so much, why did Lukas post this picture and send it to Perez Hilton?! (Thanks to one of my commenters who told me about http://nouveaubelles.blogspot.com/2008/08/sadly-its-come-to-this.html, which is where I saw this):

A few of you asked me if I will be attending the show tomorrow in Virginia. I actually would (for my friends in Beretta Jane, not for Lukas) but I have my C/C++ class tomorrow evening. I am not, as Kendra states, hiding behind a fake name and behind a computer. CherryTeresa is the name I have been using for years, before MySpace or Livejournal or any of that. It is the name I have been using when I perform or record my music. People know me and know who I am. You’re the one posting anonymous comments on my blog. Now you claim you won’t post on my page and you’d rather post in your own blog but that’s only because I made it known that I have the IP addresses logged. And because you realize I screen the comments (but I have unscreened all of them except for those who double-posted or posted their own personal information).

And by the way, I’m not hurt, as you say. This is funny stuff!

Lukas Rossi blocked me! And other updates

 

Funny how I never even talked to him or messaged him. Haha! I only ever posted one comment to him and it was nice (before he show happened).
I guess I really upset him. Wah, wah, wah. Should I call the wahmbulance?

(In case you missed the my original blog about Mr. Rossi and all the comments I received, go here: http://cherry-teresa.livejournal.com/98135.html). I went to a party yesterday (and hung out with some people who have much more touring experience, have sold more records, and have played in front of more people than this chump… and they were much nicer and down to earth). When I came home, I discovered I had received all these livejournal comments. Too funny.

Not only did my blog get dozens of comments but there were many more text messages, emails, and myspace messages, and myspace comments that I received. Almost all of them agreed that Lukas blows and even gave me additional unflattering information on this tool.
Only two comments so far were negative toward Mandi (mandimercedes ) and I. And the IP address was logged. Both posts were from the same IP. The same person(s) posted it. Based on the location and the way it was written, it was probably Lukas and Kendra Jade posting. (KJ = his porn star wife/manager).

Kendra Jade posted a blog stating how well the show went and that there were 200 people there. Not true. By the end of the night, there were only about 30 people. Most of them were either there for free and just talking to each other, hecklers who were mean to Lukas since he deserved it, or Canadians who followed him. Yes, there were more than 30 (but not 200) at the beginning of his set, but most of them left after the first or second song because of the arrogant things he was saying to the audience.

And I was mentioned at the end of the blog. If it wasn’t me she was referring to, then I guess other people made it known they were unhappy with her and Lukas.

I’m referred to at the end as "that one girl". Guess what? I’m not the only girl (or guy) who was dissatisfied!
The club didn’t have as many people there as she stated and the club promoted for more than a week. I understand that sometimes in the music business, people will sugarcoat things and that’s fine. But don’t straight up lie.
I’m also putting Kendra Jade’s post behind a cut on here, just in case she deletes or edits anything out in her blog.

Lukas Rossi is a chump

If you thought Solange Knowles acted like a spoiled brat this past week on Fox News in Vegas, then you don’t want anything to do with Lukas Rossi. I would have taken video of how pompous he acted, but no video or pictures were allowed during his set.

I do not plan to see Lukas Rossi or his band Stars Down perform ever again. He played a solo acoustic set last night at Bedrock in Baltimore. He was an arrogant chump. He demanded the audience be totally silent during his entire set. He acted like a complete asshole. His porn star wife/manager was telling everyone they could not meet him and that people would have to pay $50 if they wanted to talk to him. (Surprisingly, no one stood in line to buy any merch or to meet him. Who wants to meet an ego maniac?) And she had a friend of hers walking around spying on people. If anyone was caught saying anything bad about Lukas in a private conversation, they were kicked out. It didn’t help me feel any better that his female friends were walking around mean mugging my friend Mandi and I.

After his first song he looked at me and my friend Shelley while he asked the crowd not to talk at all. We were not being loud at all by any means. We said hello to each other and hugged but apparently we were being extremely rude. And throughout the set, people were still talking – definitely not a loud level – and he said "I still hear some talky talkertons in the room. Please do not speak while I perform" in a pissed off tone. People stopped talking or clapping in between his songs so then he was like "Are you guys still there"?

The guy had absolutely no sense of humor when people said stuff to him. And with him giving the audience a hard time, a couple guys started heckling him. And rightfully so. Honestly, I think the crowd should have been much meaner to him. Several people left because of how he was acting.
A cell phone went off between songs and a guy jokingly said "Turn off your cell phone! We have to have absolute silence during the set!" And Rossi was pissed. Hahaha. Come on. That was funny. But nope, he didn’t think so.
It wasn’t just the fact that he wanted total silence. He just generally acted like he was on his high horse the way he carried himself and the other things he said between songs.

Bedrock isn’t a big venue. The place wasn’t even half full. And most of the people who were there weren’t even from Baltimore. They were Canadian fans who have been following him for whatever reason. He had no right to act the way he did. I have briefly met Tommy Lee, one of his former bandmates, who is obviously way more famous than him. And Tommy did not act like this at all and did not charge me money to talk to him.

Some of the people who were there didn’t even know who he was. They were there for the opening bands and stayed for him. They seemed to like him until he started acting ridiculous. Then they left. So he lost fans thanks to his attitude.

Lukas acted like he has never played a show or a bar in his life. You do not demand complete silence. I could maybe understand if the audience was being completely roudy and ridiculously loud. But this was not the case at all. You could still definitely hear Lukas with no problem whatsoever. I have played countless shows were the crowd was talking. I want the crowd to have a good time. People can still listen.
But I have played solo sets where the crowd was completely silent. You know how I did it? I did not demand it. I captivated the audience and so they wanted to be completely quiet. It was their choice. They talked during the performers before and after me but did not speak while I played. It wasn’t because I told them to shut up. Otherwise, I would have rightfully been booed and heckled.

 
Most of my friends are musicians. I am friends with some well-known people – people way more known than Rossi. I’m good friends with those who are considered arrogant and people ask how I can be friends with them. But this guy! This guy takes the cake. This guy makes the people I know look like gentlemen. I am used to how some musicians can be and their attitude. But they are nothing compared to Rossi. This guy seems to have little appreciation for his fans. He’s losing the few he has.
 

How was Rossi’s performance? Does anyone really even care at this point?

Candlebox – Saturday, July 14. Winger fans getting a hard time.

A week ago, I saw Candlebox perform at the Recher Theatre in Towson, MD. To be honest, I wasn’t their biggest fan. I didn’t hate them, either. I was going because my boyfriend (Joey)’s birthday was that week. He loves them, so I bought us tickets. Well, I’m glad I went! I didn’t realize just how good the singer’s voice sounds. It’s better live than on CD. It’s really good – kind of soulful and bluesy. They weren’t just another grunge band. Their guitarist was impressive.

But something caught me off guard. The singer was acting flamboyant and effeminate. That’s definitely not a bad thing. It’s just funny because if you watch their videos from the nineties, it’s like a completely different person is their singer now: Not just the way he looks but the way he acts and moves. Yes, the rest of the band look a little different than back then. But that’s because styles have changed and they are older. But the singer was very different. He had on a black vest, tight black jeans (tight hip huggers that showed off his bulge), and these white cowboy-ish designer shoes that matched his belt. And the way he was moving and acting was completely different than how he did in the 90s. He was practically doing the jazz hands. Every time he moved his hands, they were really flimsy. Like, when he put his hand to his ears to be like “I can’t hear you” to the audience, he did it in this flimsy way. He reminded me of the lead singer of the Scissor Sisters. I like his stage presence, though! I think I like it better than how he used to act. They were awesome. Just not what I expected.
They did an encore and did “Breathe” by Pink Floyd. The lead singer didn’t sing it though. It was the lead guitarist who sung it. The singer came back on stage after “Breathe” was over. (I think the singer had to go to the bathroom or something. That’s just my theory).

Compare these two videos to get an idea of what I’m talking about. The second video isn’t that great and doesn’t really show just how flamboyant he was. But you get an idea:

Before Candlebox started, this meat-head asshole came up to Joey and was giving him a hard time because Joey was wearing a Winger shirt. So I told him off and we walked away. We were on our way to walk up front when this happened. Later on in the show, the asshole somehow comes all the way up to the front of the stage where we are. (The club was really packed from front to back, so this is harder to do than you might think. Plus, I don’t know how he would have even spotted us). Anyway, he started putting his arm around Joey and then tried to be friends with him. It was really weird. I noticed after he came up front that the back of his shirt said “Back door is best”. What?!

Poor Winger fans. They’ve been getting a hard time for years. Remember this from Beavis and Butt-head?

Stewart is usually depicted wearing a Winger t-shirt (as opposed to the heavier Metallica and AC/DC shirts that Beavis and Butthead wore) which helps characterize him as out of touch, as Winger was/is not thought highly of in the Heavy Metal subculture. When I worked at Bibelot in the music section (1999-2001), I found a solo CD by Kip Winger. It was in the New Age section.

L.A.M.E. – Gwen Stefani sues.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 17, 2007) — It appears Gwen Stefani doesn’t “Heart” Forever 21.

Gwen’s Harajuku Lovers fashion line is suing popular retail outlet Forever 21 for trademark infringement, claiming the clothing chain allegedly stole designs from the Harajuku Lovers line, Access Hollywood has learned.

In papers filed in Los Angeles Federal Court, reps for Gwen’s Harajuku Lovers claim Forever 21 is marketing, promoting and selling products featuring a design “virtually indistinguishable” from Harajuku’s signature heart/box logo.

The lawsuit claims Forever 21 “changed a couple of words in the Heart/Box Trademark, which are inconspicuous and likely to go unnoticed by a consumer.”

Specifically, the lawsuit claims Forever 21 used the design but changed the word “Harajuku” to “Forever” and the word “Lovers” to “Love.”

As a result of the chain using a similar image, Harajuku has allegedly “suffered and continues to suffer damage to its business reputation.”

Gwen launched the accessory line in 2005 to coincide with her Harajuku Lovers Tour.

 


Here’s what I think:
1). How about Asians and Asian-Americans sue Gwen for defamation of character? Those stereotypical, “Harajuku” girls are a disgrace, a minstrel show, and just plain horrible. She practically has them made up in Yellow Face. (Don’t tell me “Well, they are getting paid well to do this”. Prostitutes are also getting paid, but that doesn’t make it right. Maybe if Asians had more fair opportunities in the entertainment industry, they wouldn’t feel the need to do this). I could go on and on about this topic. But many others have done so far me already:

2). Gwen is guilty of ripping off others, making this hypocritical. 

Sure, many if not most celebrities have copied something from others, but Gwen is worse than most. When I first heard No Doubt, the first thing I thought about Gwen’s voice was “Oh great, another female ska singer who tries to sing just like that. Boring!”.  

Her clothing, accessories, and make-up is just generic copying of cultures: 
-She stole generic trends from subcultures: She normally dresses like your typical teenaged alternative culture chick (punk/rude girl/goth/raver/freak/etc) who hangs out at the mall or at show. Yes, we dressed like this before No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom” came out. To most of the mainstream culture unaware of the alternative scene, Gwen was original and some even thought she invented this style. The truth is, a lot of this was already out of style and overdone in the subculture, and Gwen re-hashing it a couple years later was just a joke to us. Even in middle school, I thought Gwen’s style was equivalent to when Seventeen magazine put out articles/pictures about “How to dress like a rock chick”.  Her style is not very original and it’s watered-down.
-She has stolen from Jamaicans, African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians. (See the article above “The Gwen Stefani Rant!” for some evidence of this if you don’t remember or just plain didn’t notice this before). 
-At red carpet events, she wears very typical 1940’s fashion or complete Marilyn Monroe rip offs. This is much of what the L.A.M.B. (L.A.M.E.) line has. Wal-Mart and cheap mall stores (such as Rave, Divah, and Forever 21) have been selling basically the same things as L.A.M.B for years and for much cheaper.
-Her Harajuku Lovers line of clothing is a bad rip-off of clothing and accessories that already exist in Japan! She does a bad job of just copying off styles that already exist – either clothing sold in stores in Japan or looks that real Harajuku girls created themselves. Calling her dancers “Harajuku” girls is an insult to the real ones. 

Yes, I realize she’s not the only fashion designer or singer to steal things from others. But don’t sue a company for doing the same thing when you are guilty of it, too. Gwen most likely would never admit that she steals ideas.
 At least Forever 21 is known for being a cheap place to buy knock-offs. Which brings me to my next point…

3). Almost every designer gets their ideas stolen.

We could discuss whether or not it is right to sell knock-offs at an affordable price so that the less wealthy can afford the clothing. And we could discuss whether or not the designs were even stolen from her clothing line since the designs already existed before she created her line.  
But let’s just pretend that she did create completely original designs. How often do you  hear about real, reputable, respected high fashion designers suing? You rarely, if ever, hear about them doing this. So why is Gwen – not a reputable or highly respected designer – doing it?

Miranda (Meryl Streep) from “The Devil Wears Prada” explains it like this:
“This… ’stuff’? Oh… ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.”

A cheap-looking tank top that I’ve basically seen being sold at Divah, Rave, and Forever 21 four years ago is being sold  by L.A.M.B. for 138.75. Pathetic.

Maybe if Gwen was ever an actual rude girl or punk in the first place, she would not only be more original, she would sell her clothing more affordably. Then again, she did grow up a rich, spoiled girl  from Orange County and only ever joined a band because her brother, Eric, started the band and wrote most of the lyrics before leaving the band.

This past Memorial Day weekend

Most of the memorial days of the past several years, I have had to work. This year, I had the day off. So I was all excited.  The times when I had to work, there were always great parties, cookouts, shows, etc. going on.  It seemed like I was missing out on the “party of the year”.  So guess what? This year when I have off, there is nothing worthwhile happening.  LAME.

But the weekend all-in-all wasn’t bad.  Friday though, I didn’t go out. I had to take my mom to the hospital. She’s doing better. She recently had shingles, and some people have excruciating pain  and unbearable itchiness weeks, months, or years afterward.  She was absolutely screaming in pain.  I felt so horrible that I couldn’t take that pain away for her.  She said the pain is the worst pain she’s ever felt – even more severe than childbirth.  She has permanent nerve damage and her eye is messed up. She also has red scars that might never completely go away. I hate illnesses so much.

Saturday, I saw Lennex at the Recher Theatre.  They are always great. But hardly anyone was there for them, which I found odd. Then I realized it was because everyone apparently decided to go out of town for the weekend, yet no one I actually knew was out of town. So where was everyone? There were a bunch of people there for the band that went on right before Lennex, a band called Ashes Remain.  You’d think they were a hardcore band by the name, but they were somewhat of a jam band with more mainstream appeal.  The Ashes Remain fans that stuck around for Lennex actually seemed pretty impressed, which was awesome considering the two different styles and the fact that they really seemed like they were just there for the band they came to see.

Sunday, my friend Adam and I went to a bunch of different bars. Hardly anyone we knew was out.  It wasn’t until we went to the Depot that we had an awesome time. I got to see some people I hadn’t hung out with in a while.  I only had two drinks – an amaretto sour (which is what I almost always order these days) and a vodka martini with some of the nicest, biggest olives I’ve ever had. I had them at the Club Charles (which is right by the Depot).  The martini really snuck up on me because I was feeling “nice” the rest of the evening!

A friend of mine, Dave, was in town and I missed him. It sucked! He was at the Rec Room after Lennex but I had already left. He lost his phone and didn’t have my number anymore. When my other friend Dave called me to tell me he was there, I called but his number had been changed. By the time I finally got a hold of him, it was Sunday night and he had to get up early the next morning to drive back to North Carolina.  He’s a soldier now, so I don’t know when I will see him again. He’s one of those awesome people that I’d talk to forever about stuff. It’s always the quality people that go away.

Women in Rock, Groupies in Rock

Wow, I was looking through my computer and going through old files.  I came across this long “editorial” or whatever you want to call it. I don’t think I’ve ever posted this, so here it is. Keep in mind that while I still feel the same way, a lot has changed in my life since I wrote this circa 2005.  I’m not in a band right now, I don’t eat ramen/Campbell’s soup (because they usually have MSG), and I’m actually sick of being poor. I’m going back to school in the fall and trying to do the “real job” thing.  Anyway, here it is:

As a female musician, I’ve always had a majority of males being my closest friends. Sure, I have hundreds of girl friends, but they’re mostly acquaintances. It’s been like that since I was in high school and it confused the hell out of my parents (how many guys are you dating? you’re not dating them? but why do you hang out so much? how can you guys be so close if you’re not “together”?)

Truth is, I can’t understand how most females look at life. I don’t hate. I just can’t RELATE.  I can’t relate to their attitudes towards certain things. This didn’t really come to light for me until I became a part of the Baltimore local music scene.

While I was focusing my entire life on music – turning down good jobs because it wouldn’t fit with the band’s schedule, living off ramen and campbell’s soup, and still driving the same 93 volvo I’ve had since I was sixteen (but loving it because the means justified the ends),  other females who swear their entire life is about music, but who mean that in a totally different way and haven’t put any sacrifice into it, makes me not understand them.

I’ve lived and breathed music my entire life. I’ve always used the saying that I’m better at expressing myself with music than with words since I learned to read music before I learned to read English. I was so young when I started out that I don’t even remember the learning process. While everyone else in school was going to the mall all the time, going to dances, or getting stoned every day, my life was totally different. I was taking piano lessons, theory lessons, group lessons. I missed very few days of school due to illness;  the majority of the school I missed was because I had some competition or judging to attend. I’ve performed more often as a classical musician than I have in any rock  band I’ve been in, and I’ve played probably around 100 shows in rock bands. There were times where it bothered me that I was missing out on the social aspect of growing up. The overwhelming majority of my friends were all people who were in our circle of pianists. And while that was the reason I gave up being in music school, I don’t regret having been in it because I knew I was focusing on something richer. Something that I loved. Something that had meaning.

So when I became a part of the Baltimore local music scene a few years ago, I slowly got more and more annoyed by things.  I got annoyed at girls who claimed that music was their life.  Music wasn’t their life!  Hanging on to the hot band of the moment and trying to date a member of the band was their goal. I’m not talking about girls whose friends are mostly guys in bands and so by default, of course they’re going to end up with guys in bands more often than not. It’s those girls whose “passion” and “focus” in life is to chase down anyone in any band and to get “close” to them for superficial reasons. Those girls who, if a non-musician were to do something to her or have a certain lifestyle, immediately break up with and call a jerk. But if it’s someone who’s a local celebrity, it’s not even an issue. It’s those girls who are obsessed with darker music, so they dress “goth”, but then when that’s not what’s big in the scene, they suddenly and overnight become an emo kid. I could never relate why a girl would focus their life on chasing down musicians when if they put even half that energy into starting their own band, they would probably fill whatever void they’re trying to fill. And then they’d be fighting off their own guys who want them! I can’t relate to these girls at allllll. I can’t understand anyone whose only “passion” in life is who they are going to get with. They don’t have any hobbies, talents, or real interests in anything of substance. It’s fine to want to be with someone. But if that’s all your life is about, there’s something missing. Besides, what do you really have to offer someone if you don’t have a good personality and traits of your own?

I know this is not all females in the music scene here, but the truth is it’s definitely the overwhelming majority. I always hear girls talk about how badly they want to be in a band. But they have no dedication to it. If they actually end up to the point of being in a band, they don’t want to put the work and complete sacrifice that goes into it. They don’t want to be a musician, they want to be recognized. There’s a difference.

It’s like what Oprah Winfrey said once in one of her shows. When she was starting out and was a local news anchor, she told her agent she wanted to be an actress. And her agent said to her No, you don’t want to be an actress. You want to be a celebrity. There’s a difference. Do you really want to live in New York as a waitress making crappy money while constantly going to auditions and getting turned down? And Oprah said she realized her agent was right and that she stopped focusing on that. Because she realized that who she is now is what her dream was all along. That was what she loved focusing her life on at that time.  But back then, there wasn’t much fame in it.

The very few female friends I’ve had, the friendship didn’t last very long. Most of them didn’t end in big fights or anything. It was more of a …. they were interested in someone in my band, or someone our band was closely connected to – like another band we played with often…. and “coincidentally” after hanging out for a while, they’d tell me that they’d been wanting to meet that guy before they’d met me. And once they got what they wanted or they moved on to the next big band in Baltimore, I’d stop hearing from them. And of course hindsight is 20/20 and now it makes me even more cautious of who I befriend.

And again, I know this is not the majority of females. And this is not me dissing music fans in general. I know that there would be no scene if it weren’t for the fans. But it’s those who I don’t really consider real fans. For example, I’m a fan of great visual artwork. I have very little talent in it myself, so when I see someone else’s work it fascinates me and I love it. And certain artworks can help me zone out or help me deal with someone that’s going on in my own life. But I’m not going to befriend all the artists just so I can date them. Does that make any sense?

But one day, I really started to think about it. Because the few other females that I can relate to have all said to me that they’ve had the same issues that I have. So I know it’s not me. And I started to wonder why things were the way the were.

Then I thought about the whole “women in rock” thing. Yes, there are a ton of women in rock music. It’s just that most aren’t mainstream. If you don’t spit out superficial crap like Avril Lavigne or Gwen Stefani (who really aren’t “rock” stars in my book), unfortunately there’s not a big audience for you in America. But, while there’s a ton of amazingly talented women in music, it’s still mostly males in this industry.

It’s definitely a change for me. When I was in music school, there were hardly any males. As a matter of fact, if a new guy came into the school, us girls were almost amazed. Since most of us were friends with each other more than people in school, the 2% of guys there were the only guys we knew.  But then when I got into my rebellious teenage years and was in a few crappy high school bands that don’t last, it was the other way around.

And I realized that a big reason there are more men in ROCK music, is because of people’s attitudes, especially parents. I had a stage mother. VERY involved in every aspect of school and piano. She is an amazingly talented classical musician, but she grew up in an extremely poor, rural part of South Korea, so there weren’t many opportunities for her. Her big dream for me was to become this famous concert pianist and play Carnegie Hall some day. In fact, it was her pushing me too hard that made me want to quit. Sure I wanted it, but she wanted it more than I did.

So you’d think that when I started playing out in bands, then playing solo, then playing back out in a band again – and doing well, that she’d be so happy, right? Happy that I’d once again focused my entire life on creating music. WRONG. She was so angry! Why was I doing music that wasn’t “real” music? Why was I in a field that is so unstable and there is no guarantee of becoming “successful”? Why would I be so stupid to take such a huge risk when before I was headed down the path to going to like a prestigious college for music and then through that I could become a professional concert musician. Why would I give up such a stable and sure shot for something that’s soooo not?

Because success to me isn’t defied in money or label status or anything like that. Success to me is being happy with what you’re doing. Knowing that you’re touching others. And being able to be proud of what your music is and what it’s about. Being able to express yourself. Even though I’d only been in a band that was “only” successful in the mid-atlantic region, to me I was accomplishing everything I had wanted and was happy as hell. We got to perform constantly to different crowds in different areas. We had a loyal fanbase. And truly the greatest thing was hearing personally from others that they could relate to us. Or that I inspired them to start taking piano lessons. Or girls telling me I inspired them to start a rock band of their own.

Sure, money is GREAT. It would certainly solve a lot of my problems. But I’d rather be poor and doing what I love than making a ton of money but hating my life. My friend Dan from a Freudian Slip put it best when he said: “I’d rather be poor and love what I’m doing. Practicing with my band, recording an album, and performing for people. There’s people that work their whole lives to make a ton of money just so they can get that two weeks of vacation. For what? To go to Bermuda and hang out with old people? I’m living a vacation everyday of my life”.

But parents are a lot less anxious about a male going out and living an unstable life and doing “crazy” things than with a girl. Parents are much more protective of their daughters. You can take the same parents who have a son who’s sacrificing his life for whatever dream and while they might not have had that in mind for him, they’re supportive. The same parents have a daughter who tells them she wants a guitar for her birthday. They think it’s some kind of phase and then, like two years later when they finally decide to buy her the guitar because she’s still interested in it, they think that’s the end of it. But then when she starts hanging out with other musicians and jamming out, they get concerned. They want to know more about these people she’s hanging out with. Then if she actually joins a band and spends all her time on that, they start to put their foot down. What about college? What about becoming a doctor? It’s like they’d rather have their teenage daughter out at the mall hanging out with boys, eating Dairy Queen, and trying on the latest M-A-C Makeup products than be a musician. Oh no, that would be the death of her!

I was kicked out of the house when I was a teenager one night out of nowhere, mainly because my mother was sick and tired of the whole band thing. And while I was extremely upset, I felt free. I was like now that I’ve been put in this crappy situation, I’m going to make the best of it. And since I can do whatever I want, I have the freedom to focus on my music. AND I DID. I think in hindsight that getting kicked out was the best thing that ever happened to me. Because it made me realize it was the only thing I had. I was doing the music thing and going to school at the same time, but since that wasn’t a possibility anymore, I just focused everything on just the music. And I wasn’t under my parents strict supervision so if I wasn’t kicked out, I wouldn’t have networked and found the people who became my peers and who became my band mates.

So basically to sum it up, I think that the reason that a lot of females are not in bands, has a lot to do with not getting the support they deserve. Not all girls, of course, some really just don’t care about the music and just care about people’s status. But I think usually you can tell the ones who really know about music, but just don’t know how to play it.

But I also think that’s why, in my opinion, the percentage of women in rock that are so passionate and talented is higher than  the percentage of men.  If you have to fight off everyone getting in your way more than men, if you have to fight not just society’s view of you but your loved ones as well, it means you reaaalllly, truly want it badly. And because you had to work ten times harder than the guy next to you, not only to get to where you are, but to prove that you’re an above average musician and that you deserve to be doing this, you’re usually going to be damn good at it.

Peeping Tom w/Miho Hatori

This past Friday I went to a great show at Ram’s Head Live here in Baltimore. Peeping Tom, one of Mike Patton’s bands (it seems like he’s in 300 bands sometimes) was the headliner. Miho Hatori (formerly of Cibo Matto and one of the voices of Noodles from the Gorillaz) was one of the openers.

Ram’s Head is a nice place that books great bands. It’s hard to have a bad seat in the house. I’m only 5’5″, so at a lot of shows that are crowded, it’s harder for me to see. But the way Ram’s Head is set up, it’s a lot easier on the main floor because of how it’s set up. Also, there’s a second floor overlooking the whole thing, which is great. I don’t like how they have bathroom attendants there. I have no problem tipping a waiter or food deliverer, but I’m not paying someone to hand me a paper towel. What also sucks is that it’s near the Power Plant, so you pretty much have to spend the $13 to park in the garage. There is hardly any parking and even if you find a spot far away, it’s on 24/7 meters that you have to fill up every hour or two. So you’d be missing the show to re-fill the meter. That’s if you can even get that spot in the first place. At least the garage is right next to Ram’s Head with the elevator taking you there. That’s convenient, especially if you’re going there on a cold night.

Miho Hatori’s songs sounded similar to Cibo Matto but less funky. It was a mellower version. I do like Cibo Matto better, but I still enjoyed her set and was excited to catch her. It was the first of only four dates that she’s playing with Peeping Tom on this tour and so I feel lucky. Back when Cibo Matto was around, the only one or two times they came to Baltimore after I moved here was either on a school night or an 18+ place and I was still in high school at the time, so I couldn’t go. Back then, less clubs were all ages. Anyway, the crowd was surprisingly enthusiastic, maybe even too enthusiastic. It was funny. During her first song, she and her band had to start over because the sound in the monitors was all messed up. I can relate. That sucks when that happens. When she said she had to start the song over, the audience cheered! But that’s better than someone audiences, who boo because they don’t realize if you can’t hear yourself or the other instruments, it’s pretty difficult to perform well. Later in the set, she walked over toward her guitar to play some songs with guitar in it, and everyone cheered loudly just for that. I don’t know if it was mocking or sincere because later people complained about her. After she played and before Peeping Tom, I walked around to socialize with people and said did pretty much what people did when I saw Mr. Bungle (one of Mike Patton’s bands) back in 2000. Mr. Bungle was an opener and the majority of the crowd hated them. Not just disliked, but hated them. Then, after they were done and they heard “that’s the singer from Faith No More”, they suddenly changed their minds and said how great thet set was. People did that with Miho Hatori. “She does the ‘get cool shoe shine song’ in the Gorillaz? Oh my g-d, I like her now”. Losers.

Then came Peeping Tom. My friends and I were wondering how Patton would pull this off live. The album has a lot of guest stars on it (some of whom, such as Nora Jones and Kool Keith, he has yet to meet face-to-face). The only one of those guest stars performing live with him was Dan the Automator. How was he going to perform without Rahzel? Well, he and his band did a great job! There was a total of eight members on the stage. Three of them were in a band the Dub Trio. There was an awesome female beatboxer, one of the best I’ve heard. The keyboardist had at least three keyboards if I remember correctly. Great energy and each of the member’s performances were spot on. The songs sound like a hip-hoppish and somewhat poppish version of Mr. Bungle. Patton says that this is record is his pop album. Not necessarily pop that’s on the radio, but his version of it. Mike Patton (along with Kathleen Hanna) is one of the few people that can really pull of being in bands of different genres. The music still “sounds like Matt Patton” but doesn’t sound the same as each other. It’s original and fresh and it’s not like “Oh g-d, not another Patton project”. I’m not one of these obsessive Matt Patton fans though like some of the weirdos who were at the show. But I like and respect the guy. Wish there were more signed artists like him in rock right now. Rock is in such a weird state right now, but that’s a whole other topic.

Patton also wore a stocking cap on his head. He was able to pull that off with his personality. 😉
