Dave Nenner – a musician whom a lot of people in the Baltimore scene would know from Truth Be Told (and was formerly in To A Science and Cylix) – has a new solo side project. I am excited to be working on new songs with him.

New solo song: Sprout and the Bean

Here is "Sprout and the Bean".

It’s also on my myspace music page and my playlist page. Here is a downloadable version: sproutandthebean.mp3

It’s a Joanna Newsom cover. I’m guessing her fans probably wouldn’t like my version and wouldn’t like my voice, though.

Thanksgiving 2008

Happy Thanksgiving! I had a small and simple, but good meal with my mother. She’s been having some medical issues lately, so she wasn’t able to make her famous dinner. So I tried to help out as much as I could. She baked the bread and cooked the turkey, while I took care of the rest of it, like the side dishes.

Some of the things I am thankful for:

  • My Friends and Family: You know who you are. You help keep me sane. Or at least make me feel like I’m not completely crazy.
I’m glad that I’ve gotten a chance to be on good terms with my mother and that we’ve gotten to know each other better. For years, we were on really bad terms but we’ve become much more understanding of each other compared to the past. And we get along so much better.
And Mandi, I’m glad we were able to reconnect this past year. I know you’re moving to Vegas soon, but at least we’ve been able to bond again before you leave. I don’t know what I’m going to do when you leave, haha. But I’m happy for you.
  • My Job: I somehow ended up working for a good company. I had been a temp there for a while and in January, they hired me. I wasn’t originally meant to end up being employed there. I was just there to do some clerical work. I don’t even have a degree, which almost everyone there does (except for some of the call center employees). But my boss was open minded enough to give me a chance because I showed that I knew a lot of stuff already and was also a fast learner in the things I didn’t know yet. I get some great benefits and they treat us well for the most part. I get to work around some cool people. Most of the people I work around have this nice combination of hip but professional. And I’m lucky enough to have a boss who is very understanding about my mom’s health issues and he doesn’t give me a hard time about missing work due to helping my mom. It’s also in a cool location in Brewers Hill.
  • My education: I’ve been fortunate enough to go back to school this past year and not only have a chance at a better future once I get my degree, but I’m learning things in which I’m actually interested. I’m lucky enough to have some great teachers and to have met some interesting other students. And most of my friends, family, and co-workers are very supportive of me.
  • Music: With so much going on in my life right now, I don’t get to record or perform nearly as much as I used to in the past and definitely not as much as I wish I could. But I’m glad that there are people who haven’t forgotten about me during this time. And that I’ve still gotten some opportunities to do projects and collaborations with other great musicians.

I was planning on going to work tomorrow. It’s not required, but it would be a floating holiday so I’d be able to use that as paid time off later. But I have so much to get done, I don’t even know if I’ll go.

Some of the things I’ll be doing over the Thanksgiving weekend:

  • Finishing up lots of schoolwork. With the end of the semester approaching, there is a lot of work due. Most of what I have to complete are projects due in my C++ programming class. One of the programs due next week is a memory game. It’s similar to this: http://www.zefrank.com/memory. Sure, it’s not a very complex game, but writing the code for it is harder than some might think.
  • Attending this show on Saturday:

I hope everyone is doing well and is having a great Thanksgiving!

Love,
Teresa

“Desperate Leaders” – a sneak listen

I’m stoked about how yesterday’s recording session went. It’s about 98% done. Here’s a clip. There’s the MySpace player and a non MySpace one for those of you on campuses that have the site blocked.

In the studio this Wednesday

I just got done practice with some awesome musicians and I wanted to let ya’ll know what I’ve been up to musically. I’ll be in the studio Wednesday to record a new song.
It’s not a solo effort, it is a project with another band that I’m recording for, but I’m totally stoked and had to share! I’m not supposed to say who just yet but I will say that it’s an awesome singer/guitarist and a totally rad violinist.
I hadn’t actually ever played with a real live violinist until a few weeks ago and it’s a great experience.
The song sounds awesome and I think most of you will really dig it once it’s recorded and put out. It’s a song that’s artistic and different but still palatable enough for the common listener, in my opinion. I can’t wait to have you hear it. I’ll keep y’all updated and let you know when and where the song will be available to listen.

Until then, much <3.

New songs “I Found Out” and an unfinished demo

Today, I posted two songs on my myspace page (www.myspace.com/cherryteresamusic). One is “I Found Out” and the other is an unfinished demo that is… well, not finished. This is mainly because the story is still to be written. I don’t know exactly how the song is going to turn out because this situation in my life is still happening. But I felt like posting what I had done so far.

“I Found Out” was a song I wrote and performed solo when I was a teenager. It is basically about how some guys have unhealthy fetishes for Asian women. I recorded it a few weeks ago but decided today that maybe I should share it, haha.

New solo song “Good Things”

If you choose the song “Good Things” in the above music player, that’s the solo song I just finished recording about an hour ago. It’s a rough demo, nothing professional or fancy. It’s just what I did on my computer using GarageBand and it was my first time using this program. There are some flaws that need to be fixed, but I really wanted to release something because it’s been since January 2001 when I last released a completed solo song of mine.

If the song sounds at all familiar, it’s because it’s a cover of the Sleater-Kinney song. I always liked the original song and instantly related to the lyrics but I felt it was a little sad to be in a major key. So out of boredom a few years ago, I decided to see what it would sound like changed up a bit and put in a minor key.

(And yes, each of the other tracks are some of the songs that I played keyboards on in the past).

Going in circles with recording

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been recording two different songs. I thought I was almost done with one of the songs. Most of Saturday and Sunday was spent recording the vocals (after the first verse and first chorus, which I already had finished). I spent time re-recording the instrumentals for the bridge to make it sound tighter.
I estimated that I was about 75% finished with the song. I was getting happy because I thought that I would have one song finished soon. But guess what happened? I was listening to the song today and it hit me that the vocals aren’t quite right after the first chorus. They’re off-key. I mean, when I play just the vocals by themselves back they sound fine. And the instrumentals by themselves sound fine. But put together, they don’t fit well enough. And I also realized the bridge sucks. So I’ve been working on a new bridge. And trying to figure out why the vocals don’t match when it’s pretty much the same melody as the first verse. Hmmm.
I am further away from finishing this song than I was before this weekend. I know I don’t have any type of deadline but it still kind of sucks. Oh well.

I’m taking the next couple days off from recording. At least I’m going to try not to record. I tell myself I’m not going to but I end up doing it anyway because I can’t help it. But maybe this time I actually will. I’m sick of hearing myself. And I have a project for school I should be working on more.
